Different light types - soft light

Once again, soft light was introduced earlier as being generated from a large light source such as an overcast sky. Soft light renders soft, subtle shadows that are flattering in portrait photography. Detail is minimised, with emphasis being on the overall form rather than the texture.

In the picture of the tree the heavily diffused sun caused by a combination of cloud and mist has created an almost abstract image where most of the image information has been subdued except for the softened monotone branches, lending an eerie, timeless quality to the image.

In the portrait of the girl, the silk scarf adds to the already diffused light where only her nose and lips show any discernable highlight. The softness of the shadow is highly complimentary to the girls skin tone suggesting an unblemished, porcelain like surface.
