Light sources: Ambient & side light

Multiple sources of light

ambient and side light

An extra light source adds another dimension to the subject. Rather than the decision being constrained to which side to have the shadow and which side to have the highlight, an additional light can be used to add additional highlights or indeed to cancel out shadows cast from the primary light.

This combination can realise a far better illuminated image with a generally more pleasing and flattering distribution of light and shadow. Compromise is no longer necessary as the full field of vision can be sculpted with the range of tones as desired.

This combination works well when good general lighting is required plus additional detail for information or dynamic interest. In the example, the ambient light is natural diffused daylight entering through the large studio windows. The second light is a small source direct light illuminating from the side. This immediately generates highlights revealing a shiny surface and shadows that define the texture and contours of the statue.
