Different light types - high key
High key images are created though flooding the scene with a profusion of light. No one type of light source is solely responsible for the effect although a diffused light will offer more pleasing results. A number of light sources can ideally be used for optimum effect with additional reflective surfaces making their own contribution to the cumulative effect. Despite this abundance of light, shadow areas are an integral part of high key images to prevent the image from being merely an over exposed photograph.
All the ethereal qualities associated with high key images are embodied in the photograph of the swans. The grace and poise of the airborne birds, although not essential to a high key image, add to the heavenly dreaminess of the composition. The predominantly light tones are relieved only by the slightly deeper shade of sky at the top of the picture and the almost pure black beak, eyes and feet.
