Different light types - hard light
Hard light as we have already seen is generated from a small light source such as direct sun or a spotlight. The effect of hard light on the subject is to create hard edged, well defined shadows. Hard light can be considered severe and in some cases unflattering for portraits unless the desired effect is one of drama. This is where hard light excels, producing high contrast, strong images with an interesting juxtaposition of light. Hard light is also successful at rendering texture when suitable light angles are employed and well suited to enhancing definition.
The picture of the roof terrace demonstrates the hard edged well defined shadows of hard lighting.
