Different light types - diffused light

As with direct light, diffused light can be from the sun or artificial lights. The common factor in this case is the fact that they are both categorised as large source lights. In the case of the sun, it hasn’t physically changed size, but on an overcast day the cloud cover will disperse the light converting the entire sky into the new source. Such conditions provide a flat, even light with little or soft edged shadow. For artificial lights, even a spotlight can be converted to a diffused light by placing a semi transparent gel, a tissue or similar material over the light. This serves the same purpose as clouds where the sun is concerned. On days when there is no cloud cover and diffused light is desired, the same effect can be achieved by using a large white umbrella or similar prop to soften the light.
Mist rising from the water is adding to the overall diffusion in the river scene. The image also demonstrates the richness of the colour of the grass. More saturation in colours is a common feature of diffused lighting.
